HYROX and Why most people underperform

The Problem with “General Fitness”

A lot of athletes preparing for HYROX rely on general training: running, lifting, conditioning classes, maybe some circuits that look like HYROX. And while that builds a solid base… it’s not enough to maximize performance. HYROX is a standardized race format created by HYROX. Every race is the same. Every station. Every distance. Every transition.

Which means success comes down to one thing:

How well you’ve prepared for the specific demands of the race.

Why Specific Training Matters

In exercise science, there’s a principle called the SAID Principle.

It simply means this:

Your body adapts specifically to the demands you place on it.

If you’re not training the exact movements, pacing, and transitions of HYROX…
you’re leaving performance on the table.

That shows up as:

  • Burning out early on sled pushes
  • Losing time (and energy) on transitions
  • Inefficient pacing on machines
  • Feeling strong… but not performing your best on race day

The Details That Make the Difference

Take something like the SkiErg or Rowing.

Two athletes can have similar fitness levels—but completely different outputs—based on:

  • Technique
  • Efficiency
  • Breathing patterns
  • Pacing strategy

The same is true for:

  • Sled push & pull mechanics
  • Wall ball standards
  • Transition flow between stations

These are the details most people overlook…
and they’re exactly where the biggest gains are made.

Experience Changes Everything

There’s also no substitute for experience. Having competed in nine HYROX races—including two World Championships—I’ve know firsthand where athletes struggle, where they lose time, and what actually moves the needle. It’s rarely about working harder.

It’s about:

  • Understanding the standards
  • Practicing under race conditions
  • Refining movement efficiency
  • Executing a smart strategy

I provide an unmatched knowledge, not only as a World Championship racer, but also as an experienced Coach- holding the highest HYROX Coaching certification and owning and running the original & most experienced HYROX Training Club in Ohio. Also, as a multi-type Head Judge, I bring the knowledge of standards to ensure you don’t get hit with penalties to set your race day efforts back a step!

Why Environment Matters More Than You Think

There’s a big difference between “training hard” and actually preparing for a race.

Using the correct equipment and setup matters:

  • Competition-style sleds feel different
  • Turf changes how you move and push
  • Station layout impacts your pacing and recovery

When you train in an environment that mirrors the race, you remove uncertainty—and replace it with confidence.

Where This All Comes Together

This is exactly why we’re hosting our 2-Part HYROX Race Ready Workshop at REACH Fitness.

This isn’t just another workout.

It’s a deep dive into the how and why behind performance:

  • Breaking down all 8 stations (split across two sessions)
  • Dialing in technique and efficiency
  • Practicing with official equipment
  • Learning race strategy, pacing, and transitions
  • Covering fueling, preparation, and race-day execution
  • Answering the questions most athletes don’t even know to ask

If You Want to Perform at Your Best…

You don’t need more random workouts.

You need:

  • Specificity
  • Strategy
  • Experience
  • And the right environment

That’s what makes the difference between finishing a HYROX race…
and performing at your full potential.
